Saline vs. Silicone Implants: Which Should You Choose?

Woman choosing between saline vs. silicone implants in Westlake, OH

Saline and silicone breast implants can both add volume, but they differ in feel, rippling, rupture detection, and long-term monitoring requirements. Silicone implants generally feel softer and are less likely to show rippling, while saline implants make a rupture easier to notice because the breast usually deflates. The right choice for your breast augmentation depends on your anatomy, age, preferences, and desired result.

Located in Westlake, OH, Ohio Clinic for Aesthetic and Plastic Surgery uses both saline and silicone breast implants. Dr. Michael H. Wojtanowski is certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery and has more than three decades of experience performing cosmetic procedures in Cleveland.

How Do Saline and Silicone Breast Implants Differ?

Saline implants have a silicone shell filled with sterile saltwater. Many saline implants are inserted empty and filled with sterile saline during surgery, allowing the surgeon to adjust the fill volume if needed.

Silicone implants also have a silicone shell, but they’re prefilled with cohesive silicone gel. They often feel more similar to natural breast tissue and tend to show less rippling, which can be especially important when you have less natural tissue covering the implant. Silicone implants are FDA-approved for cosmetic augmentation in women ages 22 and older.

What Happens if a Breast Implant Ruptures?

Rupture is handled differently depending on the implant filling. When a saline implant ruptures, the body absorbs the saline, and the implant usually deflates noticeably.

A silicone implant rupture can be harder to detect because the gel may remain contained within the scar tissue capsule surrounding the implant, sometimes without causing noticeable symptoms. For this reason, the FDA recommends ultrasound or MRI screening for silicone implants beginning five to six years after surgery and every two to three years after that.

Which Breast Implant Feels More Natural?

Silicone implants generally feel softer and more natural than saline implants. They’re also less prone to visible or palpable rippling.

That doesn’t mean silicone is automatically the better choice for you. Your existing breast tissue, implant size and shape, placement above or below the chest muscle, and your goals all influence how your breasts will ultimately look and feel.

How Do You Choose Between Saline and Silicone Implants?

Your implant filling is just one part of breast augmentation planning. Dr. Wojtanowski also considers your anatomy, existing breast shape and volume, desired size, and available implant options.

You may lean toward saline if easier rupture detection or the ability to adjust implant volume during surgery matters more to you. Silicone can be appealing if a softer feel and reduced rippling are higher priorities. Talking through those tradeoffs will help you choose what fits your body and preferences.
