If you’re considering a chin implant, you’ve probably asked questions like, “Will this change my bite?” or “Will this make my jaw feel weird when I chew?”
These are smart questions – because anything that involves the lower face can sound like it might affect the teeth, jaw joints, and everyday things like eating or talking.
At the Ohio Clinic for Aesthetic and Plastic Surgery, Michael H. Wojtanowski, MD, FACS, helps patients make confident choices through safety-focused planning and decades of experience in facial surgery. As a well-known Cleveland plastic surgeon who has performed thousands of cosmetic procedures, including chin implants, Dr. Wojtanowski is trusted for results that look natural and feel comfortable.
In this blog, you’ll learn how a chin implant interacts with your jaw anatomy, whether it can alter your bite, and what to expect from jaw function during recovery.
Does a Chin Implant Actually Change Your Bite?
In most cases, a chin implant does not change your bite.
That’s because a chin implant sits on the front of the chin bone (mandible) and is designed to improve projection and balance — not move the jaw or reposition the teeth. Your bite is controlled by how your upper and lower teeth meet (your “occlusion”), and a standard chin implant procedure typically doesn’t interfere with that.
Bite changes are more commonly associated with jaw surgery, not with implant placement.
Can a Chin Implant Affect Jaw Function or TMJ?
While your bite usually stays the same, it’s still possible to notice temporary differences in jaw comfort after surgery. Some people experience:
- Mild tightness when opening wide
- Soreness while chewing
- A “tired jaw” feeling, especially in the first week
- Stiffness from swelling
These short-lived symptoms are often related to healing, muscle tension, and inflammation, rather than to permanent jaw dysfunction. If you already have TMJ issues, stress, clenching, or bite imbalance, your jaw may also feel more sensitive during recovery.
